Chicken and Dumplings: A Homestyle Comfort Food Recipe

Chicken and Dumplings

When it comes to comfort food, nothing beats a hearty bowl of chicken and dumplings. This classic dish has been a staple in many households, including ours. Inspired by our mom’s recipe, we’ve perfected our own version that strikes a balance between indulgence and healthiness.

The Magic of Dumplings

Unlike some variations that feature pasta-like dumplings, our recipe stays true to the traditional method. These dumplings are more like fluffy biscuits, soaking up the flavors of the savory broth. It’s important to note this distinction, as Southern cooking often brings forth unique interpretations of familiar dishes.

Cooking the Perfect Chicken and Dumplings

To start, heat oil in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until softened. Incorporate carrots and continue cooking until tender, then add celery. Once the vegetables are soft, introduce the chicken, stirring until it is no longer pink in the middle. Pour in the chicken broth, water, and bouillon cube, stirring to combine. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.

The Perfect Dumplings

While the broth simmers, prepare the dumplings. You can either use the recipe we’ve provided or opt for a baking mix if you prefer. For our homemade dumplings, melt butter in the microwave and then add all the remaining ingredients. The dough should have a soft, cookie batter-like consistency. If it seems too dry, add a tablespoon or two of milk to loosen it up.

Adding the Finishing Touches

Just before it’s time to add the dumplings, stir in the peas and make sure everything is well combined. Spoon the dumpling dough over the top of the simmering liquid. Don’t worry if some of the dumplings sink into the broth; as they cook, they will puff back up to the surface. For even distribution, opt for smaller dumplings. However, if you prefer larger dumplings, keep in mind that the cooking time may need to be increased. Cover the pot with a lid and let it sit for 12-15 minutes. Remove the lid and serve the delicious chicken and dumplings in bowls.

That’s it! We hope you enjoy this wholesome and comforting dish as much as we do. For more mouth-watering recipes and barbecue inspiration, visit Rowdy Hog Smokin BBQ. Happy cooking!
