The Chicken Quilt: A Delightful Surprise for Chicken Lovers

Do you love quilts and adorable chicken designs? If so, you’re in for a treat! Today, we’re excited to share the story of the Chicken Quilt, a charming creation that has captured the hearts of many quilting enthusiasts.

A Gift for A Chicken Enthusiast

The Chicken Quilt was specially made for my sister, a proud new chicken owner. Inspired by a chicken pillow I saw on Instagram, I knew I had to create something just as delightful for her. This quilt became one of those cherished projects on my never-ending to-do list.

A Quilting Retreat Project

In July, I attended a quilting retreat with some friends, and that’s where the Chicken Quilt came to life. Rather than working on the other projects I brought along, I decided to start this quilt. And here’s the best part—all the fabric for this quilt, including the backing, came from the fabric share table at the retreat. It truly was a collaborative effort among friends.

Creating the Chicken Blocks

To bring the chickens to life on the quilt, I followed the Chicken Quilt Block Tutorial by Sew Inspired. While I wasn’t sure how the chicken’s comb was supposed to be attached, I opted for raw edge applique to ensure it laid flat and stayed securely in place. It was a joy to design combs of various sizes and shapes, giving each chicken its own unique personality.

The Perfect Throw Size Quilt

The Chicken Quilt is a cozy throw size quilt, featuring a grid layout of 6 columns and 9 rows, totaling 54 blocks. To complete the quilt, I added a 2.5-inch sashing. The final dimensions of the quilt are approximately 60 inches by 78 inches.

A Blend of Fabrics

For this quilt, I selected neutral fabrics with pops of yellow. Many of these fabrics are from the Carolyn Friedlander collection, while others come from Cotton and Steel and Cloud 9. The backing fabric is from Joann’s—a perfect complement to the overall design.

The Art of Free Motion Quilting

To add texture and depth to the quilt, I chose to quilt it with free motion scallops. This technique gives the quilt an organic and playful feel. By marking evenly spaced horizontal lines with a hera marker, I was able to create the scallops freehand. If you’re interested in trying this technique, I have a tutorial available here.

A Special Chicken Block

Among the many adorable chicken blocks, there’s one that stands out as my personal favorite. It features a striking black and white print, adding character to the quilt’s overall design.

The Finishing Touch: Binding

To give the quilt a vibrant touch, I used a yellow Carolyn Friedlander fabric for the binding. It adds a pop of color to the neutral chicken-themed quilt and ties the whole design together beautifully.

A Cherished Surprise

When I presented the Chicken Quilt to my sister, it brought her immense joy. The quilt serves as a reminder of her love for chickens and the special bond we share. It was an incredibly rewarding experience to surprise her with something so heartfelt and handmade.
