Ingredients (+ Notes & Substitutions)

  • Chicken breast: For a tender and juicy filling, boneless skinless chicken thighs or tenderloins can be used as alternatives.

  • Hoagie rolls: If you can’t find hoagie rolls, sub rolls are a suitable substitute. They have a similar texture but are slightly softer.

  • Butter: Use butter to spread on the rolls and for cooking the veggies and chicken.

  • Garlic powder: Sprinkle garlic powder on the hoagie rolls before baking for added flavor.

  • Kosher salt

  • Yellow onion: Yellow onions, known for their mild sweetness, pair beautifully with the spicy buffalo sauce and jalapenos in this recipe. However, white onions can also be used as a substitute.

  • Pickled jalapenos: If you find jalapenos too spicy, you can opt for milder banana peppers or omit the peppers entirely.

  • Frank’s RedHot: Known for its authentic buffalo flavor, Frank’s RedHot is the perfect choice for this recipe. Its accessibility and fantastic taste make it an essential ingredient.

  • Provolone cheese: Stay true to the classic Philly cheesesteak by using Provolone cheese. However, if you prefer a different cheese, pepper Jack or mozzarella can be delicious alternatives.

  • Ranch or blue cheese dressing

How to Prepare Buffalo Chicken Cheesesteaks (+Tips)

  1. To easily slice the chicken thinly, place the chicken breast in the freezer for 30-45 minutes. This step is crucial for achieving the perfect cheesesteak texture, so don’t skip it!

  2. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. Spread butter on the inside of the hoagie rolls and sprinkle them with garlic powder. Arrange the rolls on a baking sheet, and set them aside.

  3. Remove the chicken from the freezer and slice it as thinly as possible. Then, chop it into smaller pieces, approximately 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch thick. Toss the chicken with garlic powder and salt, and set it aside.
