How To Make French Dip Sandwiches

Follow these simple steps to create your own Slow Cooker French Dip Sandwiches:

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and honey. Set aside.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Pat the chuck roast dry with paper towels, season lightly with salt and pepper.
  3. Sear the roast in the pot until browned on both sides, approximately 3 minutes per side. Transfer the roast to a slow cooker, leaving the oil in the pot. Add the onion to the pot and sauté for 3 minutes, then add the garlic and sauté for an additional 30 seconds.
  4. Remove the pot from heat, pour the beef broth mixture into the pot, and scrape any browned bits from the bottom. Pour the mixture into the slow cooker over the roast.
  5. Submerge the rosemary and thyme sprigs into the broth on the sides of the roast. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.
  6. Remove the roast from the slow cooker and transfer it to a cutting board. Shred the meat using two forks. Pour the broth mixture in the slow cooker through a fine mesh sieve into a bowl and discard the mixture in the sieve.
  7. Return the shredded roast to the now-empty slow cooker and toss it with 1/3 cup of the strained broth mixture.

Toasting the Buns

To take your French Dip Sandwiches to the next level, consider toasting the buns. Follow these steps:

  1. For rolls, preheat the oven to 350 degrees (a countertop toaster oven works great if you have one). Cut the buns through the center and place them cut side up on a rimmed baking sheet.
  2. Spread butter on each side of the buns, then toast in the preheated oven for 8 minutes. Add cheese to one half of each bun and toast for an additional 2 minutes.
  3. Layer the beef over the buns and top with the remaining halves. Serve warm with the remaining broth for dipping.

Can I Use Other Cuts of Beef?

While chuck roast is the preferred choice for these sandwiches, you can also use cross rib roast as an alternative. Keep in mind that cross rib roast may be slightly less tender and flavorful due to less marbling of fat throughout. However, if it’s on sale or your preferred option, feel free to use it.
